Who we are

Far Lombard is a cultural association dedicated to the promotion and revitalization of the Lombard language.

Officially founded on 18 October 2017, it had already been active since 2010.

The Association promotes the Lombard language as a normal means of supra-provincial communication in all fields, especially those where it is now excluded or almost excluded, such as journalistic information, education, administration, and scientific and literary production.
This is because the normal, everyday, and shared use of written Lombard is one of the fundamental factors that help people learn to speak the language and encourage its transmission from adults to children.

The specific aim of Far Lombard is to produce and disseminate editorial writings and audio-video materials in the Lombard language, exclusively by means of the polynomic local orthography Scriver Lombard (SL).

As regards orthographic choices, the Association refers exclusively to the text Scriver LombardScriver Lombard (L. Brasca, 2011–2015, ed. Menaresta) and the online dictionary dizionari.lombard.

The Lombard language

The Lombard language is classified by UNESCO among endangered languages, with the ISO 639-3 code lmo.

According to a “polynomic” approach, by Lombard language the Association means the set of local Romance varieties historically spoken throughout all the administrative provinces of the Lombardy region, in the entire territories of the provinces of Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in some municipalities of the province of Alessandria and of the Veronese Garda area, throughout the Canton of Ticino in Switzerland, in the Grisons valleys of the southern Alpine slope in Switzerland, and in western Trentino. Among the varieties of the Lombard language listed above and targeted by the Association’s interest and activities are also the so-called “transition varieties towards neighbouring languages”, spoken in certain border localities within the area defined above.

Far Lombard promotes every local spoken variety of Lombard, as each is an equally important expression of the Lombard language.
